Christmas Appeal helped 1277 people in need

The 2014 Christmas Appeal was a great success yet again. Over 750 gifts were packed and delivered to children in need and over 450 families received food hampers to enjoy on Christmas Day, the majority of these recipients belonging to one of UnitingCare West’s 35 programs.

In total we were able to help 1277 West Australians who were experiencing hardships this Christmas.

This year UCW’s Christmas Workshop in Victoria Park saw over 290 volunteers help select and pack the donated food and toys. These volunteers ranged from students who attend Perth’s Uniting Church schools to corporate volunteers, along with individuals just genuinely interested in contributing their time.

Thank you to everyone who donated their time, purchased gifts, or gave food and money towards the appeal this year, especially all those community members who came to UCW’s aid when there was not enough food to fill the requested number of hampers. The generosity of the Perth community in donating this food enabled UCW to fill the final 200 hampers required by Perth families.

In the aftermath of Christmas, UCW is asking community members to donate their unwanted Christmas gifts. If you received any gifts this year that will simply gather dust on a forgotten shelf and you think it would be appropriate for a child or adult next Christmas, please bring it down to UnitingCare West’s reception at 16 Sunbury Road, Victoria Park.

Appropriate gifts will be re-gifted to those members of our community who are most in need, both throughout the year at service events or during the next Christmas appeal.
