On Friday 14 November, UnitingCare West’s program Food Rescue officially launched two Cargo Carts within the Perth CBD.
Collecting leftover rolls, sandwiches and other café items from CBD cafés, these carts will be entirely operated by corporate volunteers within Perth city. The fresh food items will then be distributed to numerous homeless agencies via the Food Rescue van. The carts will be located at ENEX100 St George’s Terrace where they will collected by the volunteers and pushed along the footpath in the city, providing great exposure for Food Rescue and the wonderful work the program accomplishes.
The fresh rescued food is kept in temperature-controlled cooler boxes and covered in ice blankets. Infra-Red Guns will test the temperature of food at points of collection.
The launch was attended by a range of special guests including Alannah McTiernan, The Honourable Federal Member for Perth, Glen McLeod, Waste Authority Board Member, Sue Ash AO, CEO of UnitingCare West , Russell Blaikie, Chef and Partner MUST Wine Bar Highgate and Muster Bar & Grill Margaret River and Vince Garreffa from Mondo Butchers. Everyone expressed how important this initiative is for Perth and the wider community, to reduce the wastage of fresh food that can be made available for programs such as Tranby Day Centre and Family Foundations Service. Attendees were treated to a range of rescued fresh food, as part of the unveiling of the carts.
A vast range of corporate volunteers have been eager to come on-board with this initiative including Alinta Energy, Argonaut, Ausenco, Rio Tinto, Bankwest, QBE, Clayton Utz, PwC, Westpac, Business News and Brookfield as well as GR Engineering who have generously sponsored the carts and have pledged their on-going support for the program. As mentioned by Russell Blaikie, there is a “fantastic relationship between Food Rescue and the Perth corporate community. This relationship is critical.”
