October 8-15 is Mental Health Week for 2016, and this year's theme is Mentally Healthy WA's Act-Belong-Commit with a focus on suicide prevention, 'Together we can save lives'.
There are strong relationships between suicide, traumatic life events and mental illness. UnitingCare West has a number of programs that work specifically in the area of mental health and at UnitingCare West, we are very aware that mental health is a factor across every one of our programs.
UnitingCare West Mental Health programs include:
UnitingCare West’s mental health programs are holistic in nature and are provided with the goal of supporting individuals in the community with their recovery journey.
The programs focus on strengths –what people with a mental illness can do rather than what they can’t. They also focus on recovery, demonstrating that people with mental illness can lead fulfilled lives in the community with the same opportunities as all people.
UnitingCare West’s innovative programs also connect people with their communities, by engaging the assistance of volunteers and peer support workers who help us implement programs.
Mental health promotion programs such as those at UnitingCare West and the Act-Belong-Commit program contribute to better mental health by keeping people mentally healthy and by building individual and community resilience.
As part of Mental Health Week 2016, we encourage everyone to adopt the Act-Belong-Commit way for better mental health and wellbeing.
The Western Australian Association for Mental Health (WAAMH) has a full program of events for Mental Health Week which you can view here.
