“Men of Hope is the highlight of my month. Now that we have the cooking sessions I feel that I have a sense of purpose. I love it.”

About Men of Hope

Two years ago the UCW Recovery Options team took a co-design approach with their suite of mental health support services that deliver one-to-one individualised support. It had become clear to them that there were very few groups within Perth’s outer northern suburbs that could bring people together and connect them to community.

To address this need, they supported the establishment of a men’s group, known as the ‘Men of Hope’. To create something that would best meet the needs of the men involved, they invited them to be part of a co-design process to shape the format, content and frequency of meetings and the goals and vision of the group.

“I came back after I was unwell for a few months because of the invitations I received. When I looked at our name and saw it is the Men of Hope it gave me hope. I am glad to be back.”

Strong relationships were soon developed and 12 months later the results revealed positive outcomes for program participants. Based on these great outcomes, the co-design process was expanded and staff started a conversation with participants about their interest in further group development.

Fast forward, and four additional groups have been set up since February 2018. At the heart of these programs is the concept that groups are facilitated and designed by participants for participants and supported by our team. Building personal relationships between participants and with staff, to grow sustainable, healthy social and community networks is a key focus of the groups.
